We all love things that are easy. We love Easy Mac, remote controls, easy chairs, drive-thru’s and pizza delivered right to our door. We like to hit the snooze button on our alarms, sleep as late as possible, and only take a shower if we really need to…I mean, that takes effort, right? And don’t get me started on video games…there is no quicker way for an afternoon to disappear than by playing video games. We like our video games easy too. I recently overheard someone complaining about how much effort it took to play xbox kinect. Seriously?!? It’s a video game! It seems like we usually avoid hard stuff. I have had the P90X discs in my closet for about 6 months but I have only gotten up the energy to do about 3 of the workouts…it’s hard work!

Do you try to avoid hard stuff? A while back, when I was a part of YWAM, we had a guy named Jim Stier come and speak at our school. He said something that day that always stuck with me, and has challenged me to step up to hard things in life and face them head on. “Easy rots the soul,” he said. Think about that from a physical standpoint; if all we do is sit around, eat pizza rolls, watch TV, and play video games, then we are going to be way out of shape and not accomplish much. But if we spend time each day running, lifting weights, and being active then we will get stronger and more fit.

It is the same in life. If we never challenge ourselves, we begin to “rot.” If we never challenge ourselves spiritually, we “rot.” Easy rots the soul.

So, as guys, let’s be willing to push ourselves, to challenge ourselves, to do hard stuff, like this guy. Let’s be men. Let’s be responsible. Let’s not get stuck in a rut of just doing what is easy…we will never grow that way! Dig into God’s word. Spend time in prayer. Worship. Share your faith. Obey God. It is not always easy, but it is so worth it. And remember…easy rots the soul!
